Maintenance of wood-burning stoves

Cleaning and maintenance

The door sealing rope wears out over time and can start to unstick or come loose.

The seal is fixed using Morsø ceramic adhesive.

When replacing the sealing cord, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned with steel wool or a steel brush. Sealing kits with adhesive are available from your local Morsø dealer. Make sure you use the original MORSO sealing rope.

How do I remove scratches and stains?

If the stove is stained or simply needs to be repainted to look like new, the first thing to do is to clean the surface thoroughly. The rust can be removed using fine steel wool and then the surface painted with Morsø Senotherm spray paint (for black Morsø stoves, use Charcoal Grey spray paint).

Please note that MORSO stoves are dark grey and not black.

The glass in my stove is covered in soot. What could be wrong?

You can clean the glass using Morsø glass cleaner. Cleaning is only necessary when the stove has cooled down. If heavy layers of soot form, the glass can be cleaned using water diluted three times with ammonia.

Soot on the glass can occur if the combustion temperature is too low or if the air controls are not used correctly. The secondary air must be open and the primary air closed. The primary air – from the grate or the air control valve – is only used at the time of ignition or when dry wood is added to the stove.

“Morsø recommends a moisture content of 16-20%. If you want to make sure the wood is dry enough, you can buy a moisture meter from your local Morsø dealer.

The glass in my stove cracked. What happened and can I replace it myself?

Cracks in the glass can be caused by impacts from firewood. In addition, the wood may contain impurities such as pebbles which may hit the glass during burning.

If the glass is cracked, it should naturally be replaced. Replacing the glass itself is a relatively simple procedure.

If you have any doubts about your abilities or if you prefer, you can consult your local Morsø representative. “Morsø also offers a special adhesive material for glass, which is available from any Morsø dealer.

Do Morsø wood stoves rust?

The stove will not rust if it is properly maintained and installed. If rust does appear on the stoves, it is usually due to exposure to moisture, possibly coming from the chimney. In farmhouses, winter temperatures are often very low and the stagnant air in the combustion chamber can cause condensation on the surface of the stove. It is therefore recommended that the air valves in the stove are left open to prevent condensation, which can lead to rusting. Another good tip is to leave the door open when the stove is not in use for an extended period of time.

How do I remove dirt from my door glass?

The glass can be cleaned using an approved glass cleaner. Warm soapy water and newspaper can also be used, but only after the stove has cooled down.

How often should I clean my stove of soot and ash?

The stove must be fully cleaned and serviced at least once a year. Of course, the frequency depends on the intensity of use of the stove. The baffle shall be removed from the stove and cleaned using a nozzle or ash pump. An ash pump is also suitable for cleaning the whole stove. Please note that the stove must be cool when you clean it.

Can stove blacking be used on Morsø stoves?

No, do not use stove paint on Morsø stoves.

Stove paint does not adhere to enamelled Morsø stoves; the surface becomes blotchy and may peel when the stove is heated. The surface of painted stoves can also become discoloured and blotchy if you use stove paint. Stove paint can only be used on old stoves that have been sandblasted or cleaned.

Painted stoves must be painted with Morsø Senotherm paint, while enamelled stoves only need to be washed with hot, distilled water and brown soap.
